Spend Your Energies On Your Story

Spend your energies on your story. Reworking it. Making it better. Increasing the scale, the depth of content, the universal themes. And I don’t care what those themes are- they’re yours to uncover and stand behind-so long as, at the very least, there is courage.

Things Have A Fascination That Abstractions Don’t

Simply to say “I love you” or “you’re beautiful” is not interesting. Remember William Carlos Williams’ advice about writing – there is no truth but in things. So be particular. Things have a fascination that abstractions don’t. A reader will be more likely to identify with your poem if there are references to personal situations or particular features – be it their body, attitude or behaviour.

Think Of Theme Songs

When I’m creating characters, I definitely think of theme songs. Writing for me is very visual, so I sometimes think of it in terms of a movie with a soundtrack, and try to transfer that to words.

Where Were You?

In America, people of a certain age ask, ‘Where were you when Kennedy was shot?’ In my house you were more likely to be asked, ‘Where were you when you first read The Catcher In The Rye?’

Don’t Shy Away From Flaws

A sense of humour is not at odds with passionate intensity. Catching the ridiculousness of a situation doesn’t betray the subject or misrepresent the strength of your feelings. And don’t shy away from flaws. The whole business of being attracted to people is connected to their imperfections.

Revise, Revise, Revise

Revise, revise, revise. Our first thoughts are almost never our best.

May You Walk A Lighted Path

May you walk a lighted path. May you fight for truth – your truth, not someone else’s – and may you understand, above all things, that you are the most important concept, theory, and philosophy I have ever known.
